MANU, 40

BARCELONA

I have been single for 7 years. I would have liked to meet someone to start a family with, but amongst the two options, I prefer to do it on my own.

Manu is a high school teacher and fashion designer. She has been single for several years, and has spent the last two years trying to meet men on Internet platforms. She wants to be a mother and, although she would have liked to do it with someone next to her, she is trying to get pregnant by insemination. A process that is quite draining and exhausting.

YANG, 35

SHANGHAI

My mother told me that if I do not take someone home soon, I am not welcome to stay at home.

Yang is a successful lawyer working for her own law firm, in which she is the only woman. She has always prioritized her work and refuses to lower her high professional expectations in order to find a partner. But in China being single woman comes with a high price: unmarried women over the age of 30 are called “shengnu” (which literally means… leftover!). Yang has to face the overwhelming marriage pressure from her mother, especially when her little cousin has just married. Like every year, in February the Chinese New Year is celebrated, and Yang is preparing for this annual family reunion.

MELEK, 29

ISTAMBUL

When my father died, my future was already written: another man had to take his place.
If not my brother, then it had to be a husband.

Melek is a PhD student, daughter of the Imam of a small town in northern Turkey. A year ago, she moved to Istanbul and she now lives alone in a small apartment in one of the most traditional neighbourhoods of the city. The recent death of her father, who always encouraged her to study and live abroad, will have serious consequences on her freedom. Little by little, Melek will have to face constant pressure from her family and friends to return to the village – where they believe that a woman must live under the protection of a man – and renounce her urban and independent life. A life that she loves dearly.

SHU, 34

SHANGHAI

I have to calm down to find my Mr. Right, and focus on this.

Shu is a businesswoman and has her own brand of cosmetics. After studying for several years in Paris, she has returned to Shanghai, where she finds it very difficult to meet and connect with men. She is however craving to fall in love, while fighting the pressure she receives from her family. As the Spring Festival gets closer, Shu embarks on the hunt for a partner in dating markets and matchmaking events offered by private companies in Shanghai.

JULES, 30

MELBOURNE

I believe in monogamy. My parents are still together and I am looking for my soulmate.

Jules is a chef. She is hoping to find her soulmate, as she calls him, with whom to share his life forever. She broke up with her partner two years ago, and since then she’s been on several online dating websites. However, the process of picking a man from a website starts to appear pretty underwhelming to her. She finds also that the list of ‘to have’ that a potential partner needs, seems unrealistic and very far away from her own reality.

Jules makes the most of these dates, and uses the online dating as a material for hers first monologue as a comedian who will perform at a famous café-theatre in Melbourne.
